Test The almost two-week long spree of violence has been waged by locals who have accused foreigners of stealing jobs and housing opportunities from residents. All the deaths have been in the small province of Gauteng, where the attacks began May 11 in Johannesburg’s Alexandra Township. It has since spread to six more provinces: Western Cape, Free State, North West, Limpopo, Kwazulu-Natal and Mpumalanga.
The violence has also caused an estimated 17,000 to 28,000 immigrants in the country to flee their homes, according to police and government sources.

Two top officials at the US Air Force, Secretary Michael Wynne and Chief of Staff Michael Moseley, are expected to be fired today, according to a senior defense official. The Air Force leadership has been involved in numerous recent controversies including an incident in which live nuclear bombs were flown over US airspace and for steering a contract to a retired general. The “last straw” however, according to one defense official, was a screw-up that resulted in nuclear fuses accidentally being sent to Taiwan.
Defense Secretary Robert Gates decided to ask for the resignations in the wake of a blistering, and still classified, report on the Taiwan screw-up.

Come Sunday evening, NASA will have placed some new hardware on Mars. Whether the Phoenix spacecraft lands in one piece or ends up in a number of charred scraps remains to be seen.
The Phoenix Mars Lander is the latest embodiment of humankind’s quest to learn whether life might once have been sustainable on the Red Planet and to prepare for eventual human exploration there. 
But before it can dig into the surface, Phoenix first has to traverse the Martian atmosphere. Those seven minutes of descent, the very last leg of the months-long journey, could be the killer: the lander, its developers say, faces “seven minutes of terror” before touching down. Of 11 total attempts by several nations to put a spacecraft on Mars, according to NASA, only five have been successful.
